In “Agonism in the Academy” Deborah Tannen argues that academia is crippled by its adherence to critique, what Walter Ong has termed, “agonism” or “programmed contention” (qtd. in Tannen 214). The results of agonism are contentious debates over issues that force scholars to over-simplify or misrepresent each other’s work. Moreover, this kind of agonistic work is valued and scholars who exemplify it are rewarded and hired. The effects of this warring culture also impact students who do not discuss and build on ideas, but battle each other offering reductive, ignorant, and limited debate. Academia needs to change its guiding metaphors from combative struggle to collaborative “barn raising” where a structure is built and then improved on.
